It is a law that allows citizenship to people born in the territory of a country, regardless of the nationality of their parents. This law is practised in the majority of the world, especially across America. However, there are also plenty of nations that don’t practice citizenship due to numerous significant reasons. United Kingdom
The UK eliminated birthright citizenship in 1983. Today, a child born in the UK is only given citizenship if one of the parents is a British citizen or has a settled status in the country.
Germany
Germany works on the principle of jus sanguinis, which means right of blood. Children born to German parents are automatically citizens. While, those born to non-German parents can be given citizenship under specific circumstances.
France
France does not give birthright citizenship. Children born in France to foreign parents can become citizens at the age of 18 only if they have resided in the country for a minimum of five years since they were 11.
Japan
Japan strictly follows the law of jus sanguinis. Citizenship is provided only to children who have one Japanese parent, irrespective of where they were birth.
China
China does not approve birthright citizenship. It applies the principle of jus sanguinis, and citizenship is based on parentage rather than on the child’s birthplace.
Russia
Russian citizenship is mainly based on parentage. Children of non-Russian parents born in Russia are not automatically given citizenship.
India
India amended its birthright citizenship in 2004. The country of billions hasn’t fully abolished birthright citizenship. But now, at least one parent needs to be an Indian citizen if a child is born in India if the parents want to be granted citizenship.
Italy
Italy practices jus sanguinis, where it gives citizenship because of Italian heritage and not just birth. Non-Italian parents with children born in Italy can apply for citizenship when they become adults.
Netherlands
The Netherlands also does not have automatic birthright citizenship. Children born to non-Dutch parents can apply for citizenship after living in the Netherlands for some time.
Sweden
Sweden bases its citizenship on parentage rather than place of birth. Children born to non-Swedish parents in Sweden do not automatically receive citizenship.
