Apps like UMANG, DigiLocker and mAadhaar have evolved became daily needs by packing many functionalities under one roof.

A highly essential platform is the Sanchaar Sathi app, launched by the Department of Telecommunications to safeguard users against fraud. Recently, the Indian government has declared that the Sanchar Sathi will be pre-installed, and this is creating news as opposition parties are arguing that this is a privacy invasion of Indian citizens. It allows individuals to verify how many mobile numbers are linked to their ID, disable lost or stolen phones, report suspicious numbers, and protect themselves from telecom fraud. With the rise in digital fraud, this app has become indispensable. 

These digital tools serve the Digital India mission by making public services more transparent, secure, and accessible. Here are 10 useful government apps in India, when they were launched, their usage, and the purpose for building them.

1. UMANG (2017)

UMANG was launched in 2017 to integrate hundreds of government services into one app. It allows customers access to utilities, certifications, bill payments, pension services, education portals, and more. It was developed to streamline public services on a single digital platform.

2. DigiLocker (2015)

To store files like Aadhaar, driving license, PAN cards or school records safely online, DigiLocker came out in 2015. The goal is to reduce reliance on physical papers while simplifying checks.

3. mAadhaar (2017)

The mAadhaar app was introduced in 2017. It helps people keep their ID online, change personal info, or check Aadhaar data. Built to make Aadhaar easier to use on the go.

4. Sanchaar Sathi (2023)

Introduced in 2023, Sanchaar Sathi lets people verify the phone number linked to their ID. So they can block lost devices if needed. Or flag scams when spotted. Staying safer online becomes easier this way. The tool came about because fake calls and identity theft were getting worse.

5. Aaykar Setu (2017)

Aaykar Setu was established in 2017 and offers online tax services, including tax calculation, PAN verification, and return filing. It was created to streamline income tax processing.

6. BHIM (2016)

Launched in 2016 after demonetization, the BHIM app was to promote digital payments. It helps users send money, scan QR codes and make secure UPI payments.

7. mParivahan (2017)

mParivahan, which was introduced in 2017, offers challan information, vehicle registration details, and digital driver's licenses. It was introduced to provide digital transport papers.

8. MyGov (2014)

Introduced in 2014, MyGov promotes public engagement by allowing users to take part in polls, conversations, tasks, and feedback. It was created to strengthen citizen–government engagement.

9. PM-KISAN App (2020)

11. GSTN – GST App (2017)

12. mPassport Seva (2013)

This software, which was released in 2013, assists individuals in scheduling appointments, tracking applications, and applying for passports. It was created to make passport services quicker and more accessible.
