Oscar Winning Best Movies List: Throughout its nearly 100-year history, the Academy has nominated 601 films for the Best Picture award. The Academy Awards have been a platform to honour outstanding achievements in filmmaking, mirroring the ever-evolving global and entertainment industry dynamics. Despite experiencing a decline in TV viewership in recent times, the Oscars continue to maintain strong name recognition. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced the awards ceremony in 1929, featuring 12 categories initially, which have since grown to 23. While devoted film enthusiasts take interest in all categories, the broader audience tends to concentrate on Best Picture, Actor, and Actress.

Certain winners, such as the comedy-drama 'Forrest Gump' (1994), have achieved classic status, while others, like the psychological horror 'Silence of the Lambs' (1991), have been groundbreaking in their respective genres. Now, we have curated a list of the Oscar winning movies over the years.

Gone with the Wind (1939)

The classic American film released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming is based on Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. It stars Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara, Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes, and Olivia de Havilland as Melanie Hamilton.

The Godfather (1972)

Crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, released in 1972. Adapted from Mario Puzo's best-selling novel of the same name, the movie is considered one of the greatest films in cinematic history. It stars Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, the head of a powerful mafia family, with Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall in supporting roles.

Schindler's List (1993)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the historical drama film tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who rescued over a thousand Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by offering them employment in his factories. Liam Neeson portrays Schindler, while Ben Kingsley plays Itzhak Stern, his accountant, and Ralph Fiennes embodies Amon Goeth, a cruel Nazi officer.

Titanic (1997)

In James Cameron's epic romance and disaster film released in 1997, the narrative revolves around the tragic journey of the RMS Titanic, a lavish ocean liner, and the forbidden romance between Jack Dawson, a struggling artist, and Rose DeWitt Bukater, an affluent young woman, on board the vessel. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack and Kate Winslet as Rose, the film features a supporting ensemble including Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, and Frances Fisher.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Directed by Peter Jackson and released in 2003, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is an epic fantasy film. It boasts a stellar ensemble cast, with Elijah Wood portraying Frodo, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, and Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee. The movie also showcases remarkable visual effects, detailed costumes, and awe-inspiring landscapes, effectively bringing Tolkien's Middle-earth to vivid life on the silver screen.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Directed by Danny Boyle, the movie revolves around Jamal Malik, a young man from Mumbai's slums who appears on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" As Jamal advances in the game, he recalls events from his life that help him answer questions. Dev Patel stars as Jamal, with Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan also featuring. The film's captivating storytelling, vivid cinematography, and stellar performances earned it widespread acclaim and eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The King's Speech (2010)

Directed by Tom Hooper, it depicts the story of King George VI of the United Kingdom, who struggles to overcome his stammer with the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue. The film stars Colin Firth as King George VI, Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue, and Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth.

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Steve McQueen directorial is based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the pre-Civil War United States. The film portrays Northup's harrowing experiences as he struggles to survive and maintain his dignity while enduring the brutality of slavery. The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, alongside Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, and Brad Pitt.

Parasite (2019)

helmed by Bong Joon-ho, the South Korean black comedy thriller film centers on the impoverished Kim family. They cleverly integrate themselves into the affluent Park household by masquerading as unrelated, highly skilled workers. As they become more involved in the lives of the Parks, tensions escalate, resulting in surprising and dramatic consequences.

Nomadland (2020)

Directed by Chloé Zhao, the film follows Fern, a woman who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West as a van-dwelling nomad. The film stars Frances McDormand as Fern, with a supporting cast featuring real-life nomads portraying fictionalized versions of themselves.

CODA (2021)

The plot revolves around Ruby Rossi, the lone hearing member in her deaf family, who uncovers her love for singing. As Ruby manages her family's hopes and follows her aspirations, she grapples with the difficulties of harmonizing her dual worlds. Emilia Jones portrays Ruby, starring alongside Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2023)

The sci-fi-adventure-comedy made history as the first indie film since the pandemic to surpass $100 million in global box office revenue. The film features Michelle Yeoh as a struggling laundromat owner who, during an IRS audit, learns that she must unite with parallel universe versions of herself to avert catastrophic destruction.
