The number of countries globally remains a topic of contention, with precise definitions of sovereignty and independent governance influencing the count. According to the United Nations as of November 2021, there are 195 recognised countries worldwide. Among them, 193 hold UN membership, while Vatican City/Holy See and the State of Palestine are classified as non-member observer states. To gain insight into the distribution of countries, let's explore each continent and their specifications along with the total number of countries they encompass:

Asia:

Asia is the largest continent on Earth, covering a vast area stretching from the Middle East to the Far East. It is home to 49 recognised countries, including economic powerhouses like China, India, and Japan, as well as diverse nations such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Iran. Asia is known for its rich history, ancient civilisations, and rapid modernisation in recent decades.

Africa:
Africa is the second-largest continent in terms of both land area and population. It is home to 54 recognised countries, making it the continent with the highest number of nations. From the vast deserts of the Sahara to the lush rainforests of the Congo Basin, Africa boasts incredible diversity in its landscapes, peoples, and cultures.

Europe:
Europe is a continent renowned for its historical significance, cultural heritage, and stunning landscapes. It comprises 46 recognised countries, including major players like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as smaller nations such as Iceland, Luxembourg, and Montenegro. Europe has been a center of global influence for centuries, shaping art, science, politics, and commerce.

North America:
North America consists of 23 recognised countries, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as smaller nations like Belize, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. It is characterised by its vast diversity, from the icy tundra of Canada to the tropical beaches of the Caribbean. North America plays a significant role in global politics, economics, and culture.

South America:
South America is a continent known for its breathtaking natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and vibrant cultures. It comprises 12 recognised countries, including Brazil, Argentina, and Peru, as well as smaller nations like Uruguay, Paraguay, and Suriname. South America is home to the Amazon Rainforest, the Andes Mountains, and the Galapagos Islands, making it a hotspot for biodiversity and ecotourism.

Australia/Oceania:
Australia/Oceania is the smallest continent in terms of land area and population but is home to 14 recognised countries. It includes Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, as well as island nations like Fiji, Samoa, and Vanuatu. Australia/Oceania is renowned for its stunning beaches, coral reefs, and indigenous cultures, making it a popular destination for travelers and adventurers.

Antarctica:
While technically devoid of countries, Antarctica has territorial claims by seven sovereign states. These claims, including those by France, Argentina, and the UK, signify strategic interests in the region's resources. Additionally, several countries reserve rights for future territorial assertions in Antarctica.

Sovereign states hold territorial claims in Antarctica, including territories such as Adélie Land (France), Argentine Antarctica (Argentina), and British Antarctic Territory (UK). Notably, the United States, Russia, Peru, and South Africa maintain the option to claim territory in the future, while Brazil has expressed a "zone of interest" in the region.
