The litchi fruit originated in southern China, specifically in the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, and Yunnan, over 4,000 years ago. It was highly valued for its sweet and juicy pulp, and was considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The fruit was introduced to other parts of Asia, such as India and Southeast Asia, and later to the rest of the world through trade and colonisation. 1. China
China is the largest producer of litchi in the world, growing around 2 to 3 million tonnes lychee annually. The main varieties include Feizixiao, Nuomici and Huaizhi. Litchis are mostly cultivated in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian provinces. The country exports a small portion due to high domestic demand. Litchis grow here from May to July, in warm, humid, and subtropical climates.
2. India

India is the second largest litchi producer in the world after China and has produced about 7 lakh metric tons (around 428.9 million kg) of litchi in 2024, according to nhb.gov.com. The major types are Shahi, China and Bedana, grown mainly in Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. India exports litchis to the Middle East and the UK. The fruit grows from May to June in hot, humid summer conditions with plenty of water.
3. Vietnam
According to Statista, Vietnam harvested 200,000 metric tons in 2023, with Bac Giang and Hai Duong as the key litchi regions. The popular varieties are Thieu and Luc Ngan litchis. They’re grown from May to July in tropical climates with distinct wet seasons. Vietnam exports litchis to China, Australia and the US.
4. Taiwan
Taiwan grows about 130,000 metric tons of litchis each year. Yu Her Pau and Hak Ip are popular varieties. Litchi trees thrive in warm, humid areas like southern Taiwan and are harvested from May to July. Taiwan exports fresh and processed litchis, mostly to Japan and the US.
5. Madagascar
Madagascar produces about 100,000 tons of litchis every year, especially around the eastern coast. According to litchi-demadagascar.com, the country grows 1 lakh tonnes of lychees. The country grows mainly the Bourbon variety. With its tropical climate and coastal rainfall, the harvest season falls between November and January. It is a major exporter to Europe, especially France.
6. Thailand
Every year, Thailand produces about 40,000 metric tons, as per Statista. Hong Huay, Kim Cheng and Kom are the primary types. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai's hilly northern regions are perfect because of their humid summers and cool winters. Harvested between April and June, litchis are exported to China and Southeast Asia.
7. South Africa
As per the country's own website south southafrica.co.zo, South Africa grows between 6,000 to 8,000 tons annually. The country mostly produces Mauritius and McLean's Red varieties. Litchis are grown in warm, frost-free areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The fruit is harvested from November to February, and exports go to the EU and the UK.
8. Australia
Australia, primarily in Queensland and northern New South Wales, produces between 2,500 and 3,000 tons per year. Tai So and Kwai May Pink are among the cultivars grown in the nation. Depending on the area, the litchi season lasts from October through March. Asia and New Zealand receive the majority of exports.
9. Mauritius
Approximately 3000 tons of litchi are produced annually in Mauritius. The Mauritius variety is primarily grown in the island nation. Tropical coastal regions with abundant rainfall are ideal for its growth. December is when harvesting occurs. Europe and neighbouring African nations receive the majority of the exports.
10. United States
The US produces about 430–500 tons annually, mainly in Florida, which has the ideal subtropical climate. Common varieties include Brewster and Mauritius. Litchis grow from May to July, and most of the produce is consumed locally due to limited production and high demand.
