List Of Countries With No Airport: A country without an airport sounds unusual, right? The airport is one of the most convenient modes of transportation that truly connects the world across the globe with ease. However, there are also a few countries that have no airports. Surprisingly, most of these countries are European microstates that use neighbouring countries' airports and other modes of transport like heliports, trains or roads. Let’s take a look at the list of airport-less countries worldwide.
List Of Countries With No Airport:
Country | Region | Alternative Access | Nearest Major Airport(s) |
---|---|---|---|
Andorra | Europe | Heliports, roads | Barcelona (Spain), Toulouse (France) |
Liechtenstein | Europe | Heliport, trains, roads | Zürich (Switzerland), St. Gallen, Friedrichshafen |
Monaco | Europe | Heliport, roads, yachts | Nice Côte d'Azur (France) |

Which Countries Don’t Have an Airport?
Andorra
Andorra is the world's largest country without an airport. However, the place is known for skiing and shopping. It has only three heliports and no fixed-wing aircraft facilities. The nearest airports in Andorra are Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat in Spain and Toulouse–Blagnac in France. Visitors usually reach Andorra by bus from these airports.
Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein lies between Austria and Switzerland. The principality of Liechtenstein is a scenic Alpine country, which is famous for castles and alpinism. Liechtenstein has no airport but has a heliport in Balzers. The closest airports are St. Gallen–Altenrhein (Switzerland), Friedrichshafen (Germany), and the large Zürich Airport, which is accessible from which tourists can take buses and trains into Liechtenstein.
Monaco
Monaco is a luxurious city-state on the French Riviera. The place is known for casinos, high-end yachts, and the Grand Prix. The nation has no airport due to its small land area. However, the people and visitors here use Monaco Heliport for fast transfers. The Nice Côte d'Azur in France is the closest large airport to the city-state, which is a short helicopter or drive away.
San Marino
San Marino is situated on the slopes of Mount Titano in northern Italy, which is the world's oldest republic and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has no airport but has a heliport and a tiny grass airfield. Federico Fellini International (Rimini) and Bologna Guglielmo Marconi are the nearest airports, and both are located in Italy. Travellers usually arrive here by road from these airports.
Vatican City
Vatican City is the smallest independent country in the world and the spiritual capital of the Catholic Church, which is situated in Rome, Italy. With its smallest land size of under 0.5 sq km, the place has no airport or heliport. Though Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport is closest, with quick travel to Vatican City by taxi or any other public transit.
Why These Countries Lack Airports
The major reason these countries lack airports is their geography and size. Generally, runways are not feasible for microstates with very little land. Additionally, all these countries are near well-served international airports in the surrounding countries. A few of them also have alternate modes of transport, like heliports and effective rail and road networks.
Which Are The Major Territories Without Airports
Some non-sovereign areas like Tokelau, Pitcairn Islands, and Tristan da Cunha also do not possess airports and depend on ships or boats due to their utter remoteness.
The absence of airports does not in any way keep these countries isolated and unapproachable, but they continue to welcome people with their attractiveness, history, and beauty. Their dependency on neighbouring infrastructure highlights the interlinked nature of travel today.
