List Of 40+ Popular Indian Newspapers And Their Founders: The Indian history of newspapers is as wide and diverse as the evolution of the culture and politics of our country. The history of Indian Journalism began with the famous Bengal Gazette newspaper, which was founded in 1780 by James Augustus Hicky. A few more popular publications soon came to the forefront, including the classic Samvad Kaumudi, established by the man who abolished Sati practise and child marriage, Ram Mohan Roy in 1819, followed by Mirat-ul-Akbar by the same author in 1822, it was India's first Persian newspaper. Dadabhai Naoroji founded the Gujarati newspaper Rast Goftar in 1854, while Som Prakash, founded by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar in 1858, was the go-to for the Hindi-speaking population. Influential newspapers like The Hindu, founded by G. Subramania Iyer in 1878, and Kesari, a Marathi publication started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1881, emerged during the late 19th century and still managed to reign in mainstream media.

The first few decades of the 20th century were the most glorious years for the Indian press, with key participation from leaders and reformers like Mahatma Gandhi, who founded various newspapers including Indian Opinion (1903) and Young India (1919). The most popular newspapers also included the English daily Hindustan Times, founded by Sunder Singh Lyallpuri in 1924, and the Marathi weekly Mook Nayak, initiated by the father of constitution -B.R. Ambedkar in 1920. This list is of more than 40 prominent journals, which all, at different times, reflected the socio-political scene in the country of seculars. Some of the founders of the newspapers were leaders of the Indian National Movement since their newspaper was the very platform by which they fought for rights, social reforms and national independence. Many of these are still with us today, influencing modern India and the digital era.
