Suicide is absolutely one of the biggest global health challenges, killing thousands each year. While developing countries such as South Korea, Russia and others are grappling with an increase in suicides, there are a few surprising countries that have consistently recorded the lowest suicide rates in the world. As we observe World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September every year, it is worth exploring the countries that have incredibly low suicide rates and why we see populations that, regardless of wars, poverty or economic strife, maintain such hope for life.
Countries like Palestine, Syria and Lebanon have experienced decades of conflict, yet they have some of the lowest suicide rates. Strong family ties, religious beliefs and cultural traditions seem to facilitate the emotional resilience of their people. Similar contexts can be noted in countries like Egypt, Oman and Jordan, which continue to rely heavily on faith and social support to help their citizens maintain emotional and physical well-being. Smaller countries like Sao Tome and Principe, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica and Indonesia exhibit community connections, traditional ways of life, and a reliance on family and kinship, which all signify the cooperative nature and hope centred around the idea of togetherness in suicide prevention.
