Top 10 Most Congested Cities In India: The 'Tom Tom Traffic Index' has released a ranking list of the most congested cities globally and across various countries. Kolkata in India ranks first among the most congested cities in the country with an average travel time of 34 minutes 33 seconds per 10 Km. This ranking illustrates the severity of traffic in the city, where individuals spend time stuck in cars queued on the street. Additional cities that have made it onto this list include Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, and others.

The primary causes of traffic congestion are a rising population, a surge in vehicle numbers, inadequately maintained road infrastructure and insufficient efficient public transportation. Here is the list of the top 10 most congested cities in India based on the ‘Tom Tom Traffic Index’ ranking. Also, know what are the reasons for traffic jams in the city.

1. Kolkata

Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal is known for its colonial charm and rich cultural heritage and tops the list of most congested cities in India as per the Tom Tom Traffic Index. Travel time in this city averages about 34 minutes to an hour during peak periods. Because of issues such as narrow roads, high population density and infrastructural inadequacy of public transport havoc is wreaked in this city.

2. Bengaluru

Bengaluru, called the Silicon Valley of India is another place drowning under heavy traffic congestion. Travel times can soar well above 1 hour during busy rush hours. Due to rapid urbanization, a burgeoning number of waiting cars and various road construction contribute to the city's traffic woes.

3. Pune

Pune, a fast-growing city in Maharashtra suffers intense traffic jams, especially during office hours. Reasons for such congestion can vary, but they mainly include poorly laid roads, constant road constructions and a lack of efficient public transport systems.

4. Hyderabad

The capital city of India, Delhi faces congestion due to its dense population and excessive number of vehicles. However, there are Public transportation facilities but they are still inadequate for the population of about 3 Crore.
