Among the most critically endangered species are the Kashmiri Red Stag (Hangul), found in the Kashmir Valley and the Ganges River Dolphin, which is regarded as an essential part of India's freshwater ecosystem. The Hangul has been seriously diminished by both habitat fragmentation and poaching and due to this only 200-250 red stags remain in India at present. Similarly, the Ganges River Dolphin is nearing extinction due to river pollution and accidental entanglement in fishing nets. The Ganges river dolphin is left around 3,200 in India.
