Natural disasters and health emergencies such as the Coronavirus pandemic have similarly impacted the nation. Every tragedy serves as a reminder of the difficulties India has encountered and the strength of its people. 

Here are the top 10 most heartbreaking tragic events that occurred in India’s past that Indians still can't get over. 

1. Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, 1919

During the freedom movement, the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre occurred on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, Punjab. British troops led by General Dyer, opened fire on a peaceful gathering of unarmed Indians who were protesting against colonial laws. Over 1,000 people were killed, and many others were injured. This unfortunate incident marked a turning point in India's fight for independence, igniting widespread anger towards British control. 

2. Bhopal Gas Tragedy, 1984

On the night of December 2-3, 1984, a gas leak occurred from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh that resulted in the deaths of thousands and caused serious health problems for many others. The hazardous methyl isocyanate gas dispersed throughout the city, impacting more than 500,000 individuals. It continues to be among the globe's most catastrophic industrial accidents. 

3. Odisha Cyclone, 1999

The Odisha Super Cyclone struck on October 29, 1999, causing massive destruction along India’s eastern coast. The storm took over 10,000 lives, left millions homeless and devastated infrastructure. It highlighted the need for better disaster management and led to improved early warning systems.

4. Gujarat Earthquake, 2001

On January 26, 2001, a massive earthquake hit Gujarat, particularly affecting Bhuj. Over 20,000 people lost their lives and thousands were left homeless. Entire towns were destroyed, and the region’s economy suffered on a huge level. The disaster prompted nationwide efforts for rebuilding and stricter building codes.

5. Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2004

On December 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal areas of India, Sri Lanka, and other countries. Due to this, 230,000 people lost their lives, including nearly 16,000 in India. The disaster left thousands of families displaced and led to widespread destruction of property and livelihoods.

6. Mumbai Terror Attacks, 2008

Every year we remember this incident as 26/11. From November 26-29, 2008, Mumbai faced a series of coordinated terror attacks. Gunmen targeted key locations, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminal. Over 170 people were killed, and hundreds were injured. The incident exposed security loopholes and led to stronger anti-terror measures in India.

7. Uttarakhand Kedarnath Floods, 2013

Uttarakhand experienced devastating floods and landslides, primarily around Kedarnath in June 2013. Triggered by heavy rains, the disaster took over 5,000 lives and caused massive damage to infrastructure. It highlighted the risks of unlawful construction and climate change in the Himalayan region.

8. Kashmir Floods, 2014

The Kashmir floods in September 2014 were caused by continuous heavy rains that overflowed rivers and submerged large parts of the valley. Around 300 people lost their lives and thousands were displaced. It took months for the region to recover, with significant losses to homes, businesses, and agriculture.

9. Coronavirus Pandemic, 2019

The COVID-19 pandemic is still fresh in our mind, which began in late 2019 that affected millions in India. Due to this Lockdowns were applied to the nation. Healthcare systems and economic losses defined this period as over 4 million lives were lost globally, with India facing one of the world’s largest infection rates. It reshaped health policies and global priorities.

10. Odisha Train Collision, 2023

On June 2, 2023, a tragic train collision in Odisha took over 290 lives and injured hundreds. It happened because the Coromandel Express and a goods train collided with each other. The accident was among India's worst rail accidents, leading to demands for enhanced railway safety and infrastructure.
