Marvel fans, get ready to celebrate as Marvel Studios is gearing up to assemble a massive lineup of Earth's mightiest heroes for Avengers 5. The news has everyone buzzing with excitement. According to reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool and Wolverine, is in discussions to helm this highly anticipated project.

Initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film's direction shifted after Jonathan Majors' departure from his role as Kang the Conqueror. Marvel Studios reportedly approached Levy in mid-March to direct the film. However, he initially turned down the offer as he was busy completing Deadpool and Wolverine and working on the final season of Stranger Things.

One of the most thrilling aspects of Avengers 5 is the potential return of more than 60 MCU characters. This will make it one of Marvel’s largest productions to date. While the original Avengers—Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)—have been central figures in the previous movies, the new instalment promises to bring back a much larger cast.

Among the confirmed names are Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, along with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Karen Gillan as Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

In 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars would conclude the Multiverse Saga and Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially set for release in May and November 2025, these movies have since been rescheduled. The now-untitled Avengers 5 is slated for release on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on May 7, 2027.

Marvel’s decision to delay the film by several months opened the door for Shawn Levy’s potential involvement. He has received the latest script from Michael Waldron but has yet to confirm his participation. Meanwhile, other directors are also being considered for the project.

Shawn Levy’s first foray into the MCU, the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, also dives into the multiverse. The film has already broken pre-sale ticket records ahead of its July 26 release, showcasing Levy's knack for handling large-scale superhero projects.

As Marvel Studios gears up for Avengers 5, fans can look forward to an epic return of their favourite heroes and a film that promises to be one of the biggest spectacles in the MCU. The anticipation is palpable, and the countdown to May 1, 2026, has officially begun.
