A new peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Research in Personality has found a significant correlation between support for US President Donald Trump and certain malevolent personality traits such as narcissism, psychopathy, and a general lack of empathy. Conducted by psychologist Craig Neumann of the University of North Texas, the study draws on data from more than 9,000 US adults collected across two national surveys conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study’s central claim is both chilling and controversial, individuals who view Trump favourably tend to report elevated levels of psychopathic traits and a lower capacity for empathy and compassion. These traits fall under what researchers label a “malevolent disposition,” which includes manipulative behaviour, callousness, and even a tendency to derive pleasure from others’ suffering.

“This paper was several years in the making, starting as a result of the 2016 election,” said lead author Craig Neumann. “It was designed to address why some people might view favorably a political figure with a history of business failures, misogynistic statements caught on video, and alleged misuse of charitable funds.”

Conservative Ideology And Puersonality Patterns

The study revealed that malevolent traits consistently predicted a stronger alignment with conservative political ideology, especially symbolic and operational conservatism, terms used to describe alignment with right-wing values and favourable views of Trump. Conversely, participants who scored higher in empathy and benevolence tended to lean toward liberal political beliefs.

Importantly, the study clarified that not all conservatives exhibit these traits. Researchers acknowledged that traditional small-government conservatives, who value personal liberty and oppose authoritarianism, might not identify with Trump or his style of governance.

The data suggest a disturbing overlap between conservative populism and individuals with lower concern for others’ rights and well-being. The findings align with earlier research linking authoritarian political figures with voters who favour dominance and control over democratic norms.
