US President Donald Trump sparked fresh controversy after making remarks about White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was addressing a cheering crowd at a rally focused on his administration’s economic achievements when he paused mid-speech to praise his press secretary, who was present on stage. “We even brought our superstar today, Karoline. Isn’t she great? Is Karoline great?” Trump asked, as the crowd responded with loud cheers.

He then moved beyond praising her professional performance and made comments about her appearance and speaking style that quickly drew attention online.

“You know, when she goes on television, Fox, like, I mean, they dominate, they dominate… When she gets up there with that beautiful face and those lips that don’t stop-op-op-op, like a little machine gun,” Trump said, making sound effects while speaking.

Trump also remarked that Leavitt had “no fear,” crediting what he described as the administration’s “right policy” for her confidence. At the same time, he contrasted her performance with that of the Democratic Party’s press secretary.

Past Remarks Resurface

The comments resurfaced similar scrutiny due to their resemblance to remarks Trump made in an August interview, where he said, “It’s that face. It’s that brain. It’s those lips, the way they move. They move like she’s a machine gun,” while claiming, “I don’t think anybody has ever had a better press secretary than Karoline.”

Online reaction to the Pennsylvania rally clip was swift and divided. Many social media users criticised the remarks as sexist and inappropriate, arguing they blurred the line between professional praise and personal commentary. Others defended Trump, saying he was attempting to praise Leavitt’s media skills and confidence.

Leavitt, who previously served as an assistant press secretary during Trump’s first term from 2019 to 2021, returned to the White House earlier this year. She made history by becoming the youngest press secretary in US history at the age of 28.

She is married to real estate developer Nicholas Riccio, and the couple have a young son, Niko. As of now, Leavitt has not publicly responded to the renewed debate around Trump’s remarks.
