A tragic shooting unfolded Saturday night at the Southport Yacht Basin in Brunswick County, North Carolina, leaving three people dead and eight others injured, local authorities confirmed. The incident occurred just before 10 pm on September 27, prompting an emergency response from law enforcement and widespread alerts to residents.
The City of Southport issued an emergency notice on social media shortly before 10 pm, warning residents of an active shooter at the Southport Yacht Basin. Town officials urged people to avoid the area and remain indoors while authorities responded to the scene.
“There are reports of an active shooter in the Southport Yacht Basin,” the city’s spokesperson said. Initial reports confirmed that three individuals were killed and eight others injured, though the condition of the injured victims has not yet been released.
NC Police Respond After Shooting
According to WECT and CBS17.com, the attack occurred when a person aboard a boat opened fire on diners at a waterfront restaurant. The gunfire left multiple victims injured and sent the local community into panic. Law enforcement agencies quickly converged on the scene to secure the area and provide medical assistance.
A person of interest is currently being questioned in connection with the shooting, though authorities have not confirmed any arrests. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office stated that it is assisting the Southport Police Department along with multiple other law enforcement agencies across the county.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office posted an update on social media at 10:43 pm., noting that officers were coordinating with local police to manage the situation and ensure public safety. Residents were urged to stay away from the Southport Yacht Basin as the investigation continues.
“Please keep all those affected, as well as our first responders, in your thoughts and prayers,” the sheriff’s office said. Emergency personnel were deployed to treat the injured and secure the waterfront area to prevent further harm.
