Blanca Lopez, a Hispanic mother from Irving, Texas, was left stunned after a Starbucks barista allegedly scrawled a racially offensive joke on the lid of her drink. The incident occurred on June 23, during a family visit to the Starbucks located inside a Target store.
Instead of a name, the clear plastic lid of her horchata latte featured a riddle: “What do you call a sick eagle?” The punchline: “Illegal.” For Lopez, this wasn’t just a joke, it was a direct insult. Her daughter first noticed the unusual message, and the family immediately felt disturbed by its implications.
Lopez, visibly emotional, told CBS Texas the word “illegal” triggered painful memories. “Why are they asking if I have papers or no papers?” she asked. The term, she said, hit too close to home due to friends and family members who had been deported in the past.

Manager Responds, But Not Enough
After the incident, Lopez reported the offensive message to the store manager, who assured her that a team meeting would be held to prevent future occurrences. Lopez believes that disciplinary action should be taken against the employee responsible. “If someone on my team did something like that, I would fire her immediately,” she said.
Community activists quickly picked up on the incident. Carlos Quintanilla, a Dallas-based protester, announced a demonstration to be held at the Target store on June 28 at 10 a.m. “We want to meet the author of the offensive joke,” he wrote in a social media post, signaling rising public concern over the incident.

As of now, neither Starbucks nor Target has publicly commented on the matter. The situation has reignited conversations around cultural insensitivity and discrimination within customer service spaces.
