US Government Shutdown: The United States government went into early morning shutdown, causing furloughs for federal workers numbering hundreds of thousands and suspending major programs and services across the country. The shutdown, the first major since 2018, occurred after the top Democrats and Republicans, as well as President Trump, were unable to reach a short-term funding agreement.
In a news conference over 13 hours after the shutdown began, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt repeated the administration's talking points, faulting the Democrats. She asserted that Democrats closed down the government because they wished to make taxpayers pay for "free health care for illegal aliens", something that Democrats have denied time and again.
.@PressSec: "Right now, we need to reopen the U.S. federal government, because people are going without pay...and that’s an unfortunate situation the Democrats have put us in—then we can discuss this very important issue of healthcare that the President absolutely wants to fix." pic.twitter.com/hikXUEpvtC

Vice President JD Vance also chimed in, stressing that policy differences were not to be used as an excuse for a government shutdown. He proposed that the government reopen first, and more general healthcare debates could come afterwards. Democrats reply that they are merely attempting to restore certain health coverage alternatives previously accessible to some immigrants prior to the passage of the Trump administration's "One Big Beautiful" tax bill earlier this year.
.@VP: "The political leadership of [Democrats] has got it into their heads that the only way to be compassionate is to be compassionate to illegal aliens, rather than American citizens... We believe that the American people's government exists for the American people." pic.twitter.com/whE6w8sf9D
