A deadly attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day has left 10 people dead and at least 30 others injured after a truck plowed through a crowd on Bourbon Street. Reports suggest the shooter was armed with an assault rifle and wearing body armour. Social media videos showed multiple individuals lying on the ground after the incident,
Police returned fire at the suspect, according to CBS News. Social media videos showed multiple bodies on the street amid gunfire. EMS and coroner vehicles were seen at the scene. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the suspect as being "hellbent on creating carnage," with evidence suggesting a deliberate intent to cause maximum harm. Witnesses reported that the suspect was wearing full body armour and carrying an assault rifle.
President Joe Biden condemned the "horrific" New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, stating that there is "no justification" for it. He mentioned that the FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism and that he had been briefed by federal law enforcement and homeland security officials, including the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Deputy Attorney General.
