US Winter Storm Alert: A powerful winter storm has swept across the eastern United States, triggering widespread school closures, delayed openings, and shifts to remote learning as authorities prioritise student and staff safety. Heavy snowfall, icy roads, and dangerously low temperatures have disrupted daily life across parts of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
In Virginia, multiple school districts have suspended in-person classes. According to local media outlets, including Fox 5 and WRIC, the following districts have announced full closures.

Delayed Openings And Remote Learning
Several other Virginia school systems have opted for modified operations. Hanover County Public Schools declared Employee Code 6, while Prince George's County Public Schools announced Employee Code 4. Both measures generally indicate adjusted work expectations for staff due to hazardous weather.

King William County Public Schools and Henrico County Public Schools have announced flexible learning days, allowing students to continue lessons virtually.
Schools with delayed openings include Culpeper County Schools, Orange County Schools, and Page County Schools, all of which are operating with a two-hour delay, according to Fox 5.

North Carolina Also Affected
In North Carolina, closures have also been reported. WBTV confirmed that Alleghany County Schools and Watauga County Schools are closed due to unsafe travel conditions. The Wake County Public School System closed all schools for students on December 8, using banked instructional time, meaning no makeup day will be required. This was confirmed through official announcements and ABC11 alerts.
School Closures Announced In West Virginia
West Virginia has reported school closures in multiple counties. As per WVNews, the affected counties include Braxton, Clay, Fayette, Kanawha, and Roane.
Private and charter schools have also altered their schedules. Dillard Academy Charter School announced early dismissals, while Mt Zion Christian Academy, Reaching All Minds Academy in Durham, and Southside Christian School closed for the day.
Early childhood programs, including several Head Start centres in Franklin, Granville, Vance, and Warren counties, have been suspended. Huckleberry’s Friends in Wake County will close early at 3 pm.
Community Colleges Issue Weather Alerts
Higher education institutions have also adjusted schedules. Edgecombe Community College will remain closed on Monday, while Vance-Granville Community College is shutting down at noon as weather conditions worsen.
