Trump Epstein Case: US President Donald Trump has filed a 10 billion Dollars defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and its parent company Dow Jones, alleging the paper published a false and defamatory story linking him to Jeffrey Epstein. The article in question, published Thursday, claimed Trump sent Epstein a sexually suggestive birthday letter in 2003, featuring a nude sketch and a cryptic reference to a shared secret. The 18-page lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami on Friday, calls the article “completely fabricated,” arguing that no such letter exists.
WSJ Owner Dow Jones Responds
Reacting to the legal action, Dow Jones—owner of The Wall Street Journal, issued a firm response, saying it has full confidence in the “rigor and accuracy” of the reporting and will “vigorously defend against any lawsuit.” The statement, attributed to a Dow Jones spokesperson, was reported by AFP shortly after the filing. Dow Jones is a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, which is also named in the suit along with its CEO Robert Thomson. Other defendants include WSJ journalists Khadeeja Safdar and Joe Palazzolo, as well as several unnamed editorial staffers.
Details Of The Alleged Letter
The WSJ article cited a 2003 birthday album allegedly compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, now serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking. According to the Journal’s report, Trump’s contribution included a cartoon-like nude drawing, with “a pair of small arcs” representing breasts, and a signature beneath the waist resembling pubic hair. The letter purportedly ended with: “Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.” However, Trump’s legal team claims the drawing and letter were entirely made up. “No authentic letter or drawing exists,” the complaint states, accusing the Journal of “glaring failures in journalistic ethics and standards of accurate reporting.”
Trump Denounces Report
Soon after filing the lawsuit, Trump lashed out on his platform, Truth Social. “We have just filed a POWERHOUSE Lawsuit against everyone involved in publishing the false, malicious, defamatory, FAKE NEWS ‘article’ in the useless ‘rag’ that is, The Wall Street Journal,” he wrote. Trump also directed a message at Rupert Murdoch, saying: “I hope Rupert and his ‘friends’ are looking forward to the many hours of depositions and testimonies they will have to provide in this case.”
A key point of contention raised by Trump’s legal team is the absence of any image of the alleged letter in the WSJ article. The lawsuit argues this omission underscores the falsehood of the claim and reflects an attempt to smear Trump’s reputation ahead of the upcoming election. Despite widespread circulation of the article online—reportedly seen by “hundreds of millions of people,” according to Trump’s team—there has been no visual proof presented.
This marks the first time Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against a media outlet while holding the office of President. His lawyers say the publication acted “knowingly and recklessly” in publishing the piece, leading to significant reputational and financial harm. There has been no immediate public response from reporters Safdar and Palazzolo, or from News Corp, beyond the Dow Jones statement.
