NYC Flash Flood: New New York City and parts of northern New Jersey were thrown into chaos on Monday night as torrential rains triggered flash flooding, prompting emergency alerts, road closures, and swift water rescues. The severe weather led New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to declare a state of emergency, warning residents to remain indoors and avoid travel.
“I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state,” Murphy posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey.”

NYC Flood: Basements At Risk, Emergency Crews On High Alert
The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings across all five boroughs of New York City as rainfall intensified throughout the evening. Chelsea in Manhattan recorded 1.47 inches of rain by 7:30 p.m., while Staten Island saw 1.67 inches. Forecasters warned of more rain overnight, raising concerns of worsening conditions.
New York City Emergency Management issued urgent advisories for residents in basement apartments—commonly considered high-risk zones during floods. “If you live in a basement flat, stay alert,” the department posted on X. “Flash flooding can happen with little warning, including overnight. Keep a phone, torch, and Go Bag nearby. Be ready to move to higher ground.”

Videos and updates flooded social media, with users posting images of swamped intersections and submerged vehicles. Emergency responders were seen navigating flooded streets to rescue stranded motorists and residents. In Metuchen, New Jersey, Mayor Jonathan Busch confirmed that local police were actively rescuing people trapped in their vehicles. He said many were being transported to the borough’s high school, which had been converted into a temporary shelter. “Much of the borough is experiencing significant flooding,” he said, urging people to stay off the roads.

NYC Weather update: More Rain Expected
Authorities continue to monitor flood-prone neighborhoods in both states, fearing further deterioration if heavy rains persist. “The situation remains fluid,” emergency officials said in a late-night briefing. “We urge residents to be prepared, especially those living in low-lying or basement areas.” As storms continue to lash the region, residents are being advised to follow official guidance, avoid floodwaters, and check for updates through local alerts and emergency broadcasts.
