As the United States prepares to elect its 47th president, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the leaders who have shaped the nation’s course over the past century. Since 1789, each US president has navigated unique challenges, from world wars and economic shifts to social upheavals and technological revolutions. 

The US president is chosen through an indirect system called the Electoral College. Voters in each state select a group of electors who then officially vote for the President and Vice President. A candidate needs at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes to win the presidency.

With the US presidential election scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024, here’s a list of all the presidents since 1789.
