Metro construction is progressing rapidly on the approximately six-kilometer stretch of MG Road from Bhagwan Talkies to Avantibai Square. To facilitate the work, Metro authorities have barricaded two lanes at several locations, including St. Johns-Rajamandi, Naalbandh-Dhakran, Chhipitola State Bank-Sai Ki Takiya, and Sai Ki Takiya-Pratappura Square.
As a result, only one lane remains open for vehicular movement, leading to severe congestion, especially when heavy vehicles pass through narrow sections of the road. This has resulted in long queues of vehicles, bringing traffic to a standstill at multiple points.
In response, traffic police have advised commuters to use alternative routes. However, these routes are now experiencing increased vehicle pressure, causing frequent traffic jams.
Critical Congestion Points:
-Nalbandh Square to Dhakran Square: Barricading has reduced road space, leaving less than one lane open for movement. The area is further congested by a footpath on one side and adjoining shops, along with piles of Chambal sand and ballast. On Wednesday afternoon, a traffic jam extended from the Agra College Women's Wing gate to Subhash Park Square, turning a two-minute journey into a 15-minute ordeal.
-State Bank Chhipitola Square to Sai Ki Takiya and Pratappura Square: Vehicles are rerouted via Chhipitola Square, causing congestion.
-Alternative Routes Affected: Long queues have formed on routes passing through Madia Katra, Loha Mandi, Kothi Meena Bazaar Ground, and Pul Chinga Modi Railway Bridge to Pachkuiya.
DCP Traffic Abhishek Agarwal stated that additional traffic personnel have been deployed to manage the situation, and drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes.
Major Alternative Routes Under Pressure:
Bhagwan Talkies: Vehicles from Sikandra and Dayalbagh heading to Hariparwat Square, St. John's Square, and Delhi Gate via Diwani are now taking routes through Sultanganj culvert, Paliwal Park, St. Peter's College, and Hariparwat Square.
Hariparvat and St. John's Square: Traffic heading to Club Square is being diverted through Madia Katra, Loha Mandi Square, Pachkuiya, and Sadar Tehsil via Collectorate Tiraha and Chhipitola via Targhar.
Pratappura and Sai Ki Takiya Square: Vehicles heading towards NH-19 and Bhagwan Talkies Square are being routed via Baluganj Square, Amar Singh Gate, Victoria Park, Yamuna Kinara, and Jeevani Mandi via Waterworks Square.
Club Square, Pratappura, and Sai Ki Takiya: Commuters traveling towards Hariparvat, St. John's, and Sursadan Tiraha are being diverted through Baluganj, Amar Singh Gate, Yamuna Kinara, and Chhatta Cut via City Station Road.
Collectorate Square: Traffic bound for Hariparvat, St. John's, and Sursadan is being directed via Tehsil Square, Pachkuniya, Kothi Meena Bazaar Ground, Loha Mandi Square, and Madia Katra.
Despite these measures, heavy congestion persists across MG Road and its surrounding routes. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
