At least two people, including a three-year-old child and a woman, were killed and around 20 others injured after a double-decker sleeper bus traveling from Delhi to Bihar overturned in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district early Saturday. The accident occurred around 1:00 am near Chandrapura village under the Karhal police station area, close to channel number 82.750 on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway.

According to Jagran.com, the bus was moving at high speed when one of its tires suddenly burst, causing the vehicle to lose balance, hit the divider and overturn. The incident triggered panic among passengers. Expressway security personnel and local police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS), Saifai, by ambulance. The bodies of the deceased were kept in the UPUMS mortuary.

The deceased were identified as three-year-old Mohammad Khalid, son of Mohammad Ibrahim from Samastipur district in Bihar, and 36-year-old Ranjan Devi, wife of Bhikhan Sada of Darbhanga district. Bhikhan Sada was returning home from Delhi with his wife, four children, sister and nephew when the accident occurred. Ranjan Devi, who sustained critical injuries, died during treatment.

The injured include passengers from Katihar and Darbhanga districts of Bihar. Doctors at UPUMS said the condition of most injured passengers is stable and they are undergoing treatment.

Police have begun questioning the bus driver and conductor. The exact cause of the tyre burst and the technical condition of the vehicle are being investigated. Traffic on the expressway was disrupted for some time following the accident but was later restored.
