Traffic ACP Jiyauddin Ahmed was hospitalised on Friday afternoon after falling unconscious in his office at Police Lines. The incident was caused by a blower heater running in a closed room, which led to a drop in oxygen levels. He is currently undergoing treatment at Yashoda Hospital in Nehru Nagar, and his condition is reported to be stable.

The Incident

According to reports, ACP Ahmed was working in his office at approximately 1:30 pm with a blower heater switched on for relief from the cold. Constable Somveer, who entered the room on an errand, discovered the ACP unconscious in his chair.

Acting swiftly, Constable Somveer switched off the heater and opened the door to allow ventilation. He immediately raised an alarm, alerting other police personnel who rushed to the scene. The ACP was promptly transported to the emergency department at Yashoda Hospital.

Medical Status

Doctors stated that ACP Ahmed regained consciousness after about an hour of treatment. Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Priyadarshi confirmed that the ACP's condition is now out of danger. He is expected to be discharged on Saturday.

Medical Analysis: The Dangers of Room Heaters Dr Santram Verma, a physician at MMG District Hospital, explained that running a blower heater for extended periods in an unventilated room causes oxygen levels to drop while carbon monoxide levels rise.

This imbalance can lead to Hypoxia, a condition where the oxygen supply to the blood and brain is significantly reduced. In severe cases, this results in unconsciousness.

Symptoms Of Hypoxia

  • Dizziness and headache
  • Anxiety and mental confusion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry eyes and skin
  • Irritation in the throat and nose

Safety Guidelines Experts recommend the following precautions when using heaters or blowers:

Ventilation: Always maintain cross-ventilation by keeping a window or door slightly open.

Placement: Do not point the heater directly at your face or body.

Breaks: Switch off the heater every 3040 minutes to normalise room temperature and air quality.

Humidity: Keep a bowl of water in the room to prevent the air from becoming too dry.

Warning Signs: If you experience a headache or anxiety, switch off the device immediately and seek fresh air.
