As Ghaziabad grapples with severe air pollution levels in the Delhi-NCR region, unchecked emissions from industrial units are further deteriorating the city's air quality. A concerned citizen has drawn the attention of the administration and the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to the issue, highlighting the negligence of local industries.

Citizen Highlights Violation On Social Media

Sachin Tyagi, a local resident, took to the X platform to expose the ground reality. He shared photographs showing industrial units releasing thick black smoke directly into the atmosphere without using any filtration systems. This citizen complaint has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the current regulatory implementation.

Health Crisis And ‘Severe’ AQI

The air quality in Ghaziabad has plummeted into the 'severe' category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassing 400.

Public Health Impact: The toxic air is directly impacting residents, leading to a rise in respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular problems. Hospitals are witnessing an influx of patients complaining of sore throats, coughs, and breathing difficulties.

Official Data On Polluting Industries

According to the UPPCB, significant contributors to this pollution include:

- 403 highly polluting industries currently operating in Ghaziabad.

- Enforcement History: The board has previously issued notices and imposed fines on several defaulting units. Additionally, some Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants have been sealed in the past for non-compliance.

Legal Provisions And Public Demands

Under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, causing air pollution is a serious offense punishable by:

- Imprisonment of up to five years.

- A fine of up to Rs 100,000.

Despite these strict laws, violations continue. Local residents are now demanding regular monitoring and strict action from the administration to ensure industrial units comply with environmental standards and to provide much-needed relief to the public.
