Continuous rainfall has triggered a public health crisis in the city, leading to a massive surge in patients suffering from fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and cough. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the influx, and tragically, two deaths were reported on Friday. Cases of typhoid, dengue, and malaria are also on the rise.
The emergency department at MMG District Hospital confirmed that two people died on Friday after becoming unconscious due to severe vomiting and diarrhea. Additionally, 22 patients have been admitted in serious condition.
According to emergency OPD records, Jai Bhagwan (64), a resident of Hindan Vihar, was brought in unconscious. His family informed the EMO (Emergency Medical Officer) that he had been suffering from fever and diarrhea for three to four days and Savitri Devi (95), from Vijay Nagar, was also admitted in an unconscious state with similar symptoms, along with breathing difficulties, both patients were declared dead after examination.
The strain on the healthcare system was evident on Friday when, due to a holiday, the OPD (Outpatient Department) only operated until 11 am. As a result, more than 100 patients had to return home without receiving treatment.
The two main district hospitals saw a combined total of 1,750 patients in their OPDs, including 320 sick children. Among the visitors, 200 patients, including 32 children, were suffering from high fever.
According to the CMS (Chief Medical Superintendent), the constant stream of patients has created a severe shortage of beds for new admissions. While the surgical ward is empty, the medical wards are filled to capacity.
To manage the crisis, MMG District Hospital has started referring patients to the Joint Hospital in Sanjay Nagar and the hospital in Dundahera, as they currently have fewer admissions and available beds.
