Work on the new Gorakhnath overbridge, Gorakhpur, has entered its final phase, with completion targeted for December 10. On Wednesday, engineers successfully lowered a 700-tonne iron girder onto the bridge bearings.

The girder, which had earlier been positioned on wooden blocks, was gradually lowered using hydraulic jacks after the Setu Nigam received a two-and-a-half-hour railway block.

With the girder now in place, teams have begun connecting it to the structure using steel rods, after which concrete will be poured to finish the deck. Parallel work on both ends of the bridge and installation of barricades on the superstructure are also being fast-tracked.

Officials said that once the concrete sets, a load test will be carried out in the presence of North Eastern Railway authorities. Traffic on the new bridge is expected to begin in January.
