With the onset of cold weather, special preparations have been made at the Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan Zoological Park (Zoo), Gorakhpur, to provide a safe and warm environment for the wildlife. Due to its location on the banks of Ramgarhtal, the cold is felt more intensely in the mornings and evenings.
Consequently, the zoo administration has made extensive arrangements to control the temperature in the enclosures for all 338 animals. A VRV AC (Variable Refrigerant Volume) system has been installed in the snake house, which automatically turns on to regulate the environment as soon as the temperature drops below 25 degrees Celsius.
Blowers have been installed in the night cells of carnivorous animals such as lions, tigers and leopards to provide them with relief from the cold. Similarly, heaters have been installed in the enclosures of hyenas, jackals, foxes, monkeys and bears, which are operated by staff as required.
For all species of deer, a thick layer of straw has been spread around the enclosures to provide warmth even when they are roaming in the open. The bird enclosures have been covered from the outside with mat screens to prevent cold air from entering directly.
As water gets cold quickly in winter, the water in the ponds for all aquatic animals, including tortoises, crocodiles and hippos, is being changed once a day. A special motor has been installed at the zoo for this purpose.
Changes have also been made to the diet of the animals to help them maintain energy and warmth. In total, the zoo administration has arranged for more than 55 heating devices, including heaters, blowers, and AC units, to provide all possible relief to animals, both large and small, during the winter season.

“The diet of the animals living in the zoo has been changed. To protect them from the cold in the mornings and evenings, arrangements for blowers and heaters have been made. Additionally, as the snake house is enclosed on all sides, a VRV AC has been installed there. During extreme cold, the aim is to maintain the temperature of all enclosures at 25 degrees,” said Dr Yogesh Pratap Singh, Medical Officer/Deputy Director, Zoo.
