Tensions flared in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly after a large number of people took to the streets with 'I Love Muhammad' placards and hurling slogans while they tried to enter the Islamia Ground after the Friday prayers, while police tried to stop them.

The crowd gathered outside the house of IMC chief Maulana Taukeer, who had made an announcement to submit a memorandum over the 'I Love Muhammad' Row. The police and PAC resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd. 

How did the matter escalate?

The district administration in Bareilly had imposed a ban on processions and despite that a huge mob gathered on the call of Maulana Tauqeer. His supporters came out on the streets and started raising slogans of 'I love Muhammad'. The police tried to talk with the protestors to bring situation under control but the mob quickly went unruly.

The protestors started engaging themselves in vandalism and stone pelting directed at the police. To control the crowd, the police resorted to lathicharge.

The protests are still ongoing at several locations in the city, and the situation remains tense. The police and PAC has been deployed in the city to prevent any further escalation.
