I Love Muhammad Row: The situation in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly turned grim on Friday after police lathi-charged an unruly mob that tried to enter the Islamia Ground on the call of IMC and Ala Hazrat Dargah chief Maulana Taukeer over the 'I Love Muhammad' Row.
After the Friday prayers, a large number of people gathered outside Taukeer's residence with placards in their hands and sloganeering. At first, the police tried to diffuse the escalation by talks, which failed, and the lathis were charged.
What did IG say?
Speaking about the incident, Inspector General of Police Ajay Sahni said that the police was continuously talking to the people since morning and convincing them to pray peacefully. IG Sahni said that 90-95 per cent of the people gathered for Friday prayers complied and went home peacefully.
He said that some miscreants suddenly appeared and started stone pelting and firing. "Since this morning, the police had been continuously talking to the people. They were told to pray peacefully and then go home. 90% to 95% of the people prayed peacefully and then went home. Suddenly, some miscreants appeared and started pelting stones and firing," Sahni said.
He added that extensive photography and videography of the incident were done. Similar incidents took place at 3-4 places in total.

In the clashes, 10 cops were injured and some miscreants were arrested from the site. IG Sahni claimed a conspiracy behind the violence.
He said, "More than 10 police personnel were injured... A conspiracy was hatched, that's why so many people suddenly came forward prepared... No permission was given for such a gathering..."
