A Ghaziabad court on Friday sentenced a man to seven years in prison for driving his wife to suicide over dowry demands in a 2020 case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on the convicted husband, Kishan.

The case dates back to May 10, 2020, when the victim, Sapna, was found dead in her home in Shakti Khand, Indirapuram. Her family was informed by her in-laws that she had committed suicide. Sapna had married Kishan, a resident of Chhatarpur, on December 15, 2019.

Sapna's family filed a report with the Indirapuram police, stating they did not believe she had committed suicide. They told police that Sapna had spoken to them earlier on the day of her death and had previously complained of being harassed for dowry by her husband and his family. The family alleged that her husband Kishan, father-in-law Prempal, mother-in-law Sumitra, brother-in-law Santosh, and sister-in-law Anita had been mentally harassing her for not providing a sufficient dowry.

Following an investigation, police arrested Kishan and filed a charge sheet in court. After five years of the incident, on September 12, Friday, the Additional Sessions Judge of Court No. 7 found Kishan guilty based on the evidence and witness statements. Despite the defense's appeal for a minimum sentence on the grounds of poverty, the court handed down the seven-year prison term.
