In a recent Kanpur Municipal Corporation council meeting, a total of 11 proposals were tabled, all of which were passed unanimously. Key among them was the approval of a 10 per cent rebate on current house tax payments for homeowners, valid until July 2025. The move aims to encourage timely payments and ease the financial burden on citizens.
To ensure better financial discipline and transparency, the council also decided that every development-related file will now carry budgetary and commitment seals. This system, previously discontinued, had led to cross-utilization of zonal budgets. The reinstated mechanism is expected to streamline fund allocation and prevent mismanagement.
The council passed several proposals focused on civic improvements, including:
-Installation of large and small gates matching the boundary walls of newly constructed parks.
-Street signage and steel poles in front of every lane, clearly marking street number, address, and ward name.
-30 streetlights per ward to be installed along with poles, while Chief Engineer (Street Lighting) announced a separate plan to install 55 lights per ward before Diwali.
-Repair of the dilapidated Baratshala in Kalyanpur North.
-Naming of the Baratshala in Ward 20 Fazalganj after revolutionary Mata Deen (Gangubaba).
The council also approved the installation of a statue of late freedom fighter Babu Gulab Chandra Seth in Hatia Park. Names of other Ganga Mela contributors will also be inscribed on stone in the park as a mark of respect.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the 26 tourists who died in Pahalgam and for the deceased mothers of councilors Mahendra Pandey and Adarsh Gupta. To prevent accidents from Chinese manjha, iron cables have been laid in the Murray Company area. The council recommended expanding this safety measure to other vulnerable locations.
In a symbolic step towards sustainability, the Mayor administered an oath to all councillors and officers to refrain from using single-use plastic. Some councillors protested the use of plastic water bottles during the meeting but were informed that the bottles in use did not fall under the banned category.

The council witnessed protests from councilors over the five-month delay in sending letters to form a committee investigating the construction of the Convention Center at Chunniganj. Although the committee was announced on 24 December 2024, official letters were dispatched only in May 2025. Councilors questioned when the actual probe was conducted.
Responding to the concerns, Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohammad Aavesh explained that the delay was caused by the transfer of the previous AMC, Amit Bhartiya. He assured the council that the committee has now been formally constituted and the investigation will proceed as scheduled.
