Kanpur's Govindpuri Railway Station is all set for a major transformation. Equipped with modern amenities and a fresh new look, the station will be virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 22. This development is expected to ease the load on Kanpur Central and improve train movement along the busy Delhi–Howrah route.
Currently, 60 trains operate through Govindpuri station, including 12 trains that bypass Kanpur Central and head directly to Prayagraj. Over the next year, this number will increase to 100 trains, making Govindpuri a key hub for passengers in southern Kanpur. The move will significantly reduce congestion at Kanpur Central and provide faster rail connectivity across major routes, as per Jagra.
Ahead of the inauguration, major upgrades have been completed at the station. On Monday, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Infra) Naveen Prakash inspected the site, accompanied by Kanpur Central Station Director Ashutosh Singh and other officials. All preparations have been instructed to be finalised by Wednesday evening.
Fresh paint has given the station a polished appearance, while decorative flower pots and green plants have been installed throughout the premises. A special team of sanitation workers is ensuring the station remains spotless for the event. A video wall will also be set up to broadcast the live inauguration for attendees.
Govindpuri has been developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and is one of 103 redeveloped stations across the country to be virtually inaugurated by the Prime Minister. A local event will also be hosted at the station, where arrangements are being made to accommodate over 1,000 attendees. Tents and pandals are already being set up.
Once operational, Govindpuri will become the second passenger facility-rich station in Kanpur after Central and the first all-women-operated station under North Central Railway.
Although most of the development work is complete, escalators have not yet been installed. For now, interlocking systems have been put in place, and the escalators will be added after the inauguration. A wide foot overbridge has already been partially opened for passenger use.
