An investigation by the Fire Department has revealed that over 80 per cent of nightclubs are operating outside the prescribed standards in Lucknow. Some lack smoking rooms, while others do not even have fire exits, and in certain cases, clubs have even been opened in basements.

Officials warned that if an incident were to occur, the situation could mirror the recent tragedy in Goa. Following widespread inspections, the department has issued notices to over 70 nightclubs, directing them to comply with safety norms within a month.

The fire department also inspected several clubs on Monday, discovering encroachment at a club operating in Palacio Mall, and noting that other arrangements were also not in order.

Additionally, at the nearby Mercure Hotel, even the smoke sensors were not functioning. Furthermore, the kitchen of Molecule, which operates next to the LDA office, lacked fire prevention equipment.

Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Ankush Mittal stated that teams are conducting continuous checks, identifying clubs that violate rules. He added that notices will be issued to more than 70 clubs, with a warning to meet the standards within a month. Failure to do so will result in further action.

According to fire safety rules, nightclubs are not permitted to operate on floors above 30 metres. Clubs functioning beyond this limit have been instructed to shut down, as they have not received any No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire Department. However, establishments operating at height with permissions from the LDA are currently exempt from action.

Nightclubs continue to operate in high-rise buildings such as the Summit Building and Omaxe Heights. Multiple clubs run on each floor of the Summit Building, which sees hundreds of visitors daily. Officials noted that none of these establishments has a separate smoking zone, as required by law. Clubs on the top floor also violate the 30-metre rule, raising concerns over evacuation challenges in the event of a fire.

Residents reported that some clubs have not reopened due to intensified inspections. A basement-level club located below Club Moment near the Summit Building was also flagged for posing severe escape risks. Similarly, officials noted that a fire engine would not be able to reach clubs located within Cyber Tower in case of an emergency.
