Chief Secretary SP Goyal, in a high-level review meeting on the preparations for Magh Mela 2026, has instructed all departments to complete all work by December 15. He stated that all tasks related to the fair must be completed on time and to a high standard.
To ensure that the visiting saints, seers, and tens of millions of devotees face no inconvenience, each department must fulfil its responsibilities promptly. In the review meeting on Monday, the Chief Secretary emphasised giving the highest priority to sanitation, medical services, electricity, drinking water, security, and transport, stating that all senior officials must conduct regular on-site inspections.
Round-the-clock sanitation arrangements in the Mela area, the availability of medicines and equipment in temporary hospitals, the deployment of doctors, a secure electricity supply, and robust fire safety measures must be ensured in advance.
It was stated in the meeting that around 12-15 crore devotees are expected to attend the Magh Mela, which will run from January 3 to February 15. In view of the increasing crowd, the Mela area is being significantly expanded this time.
Key Measures:
-The length of the bathing ghats has been increased from 2 kilometres to 2.8 kilometres
-The number of sectors has also been increased from five to seven
-The Mela area has been expanded from 750 to 800 hectares
-Parking facilities have also been increased from 30 to 42
-The number of pontoon bridges has been raised from six to seven
-The number of participating organisations will increase from 4,599 to 4,900
-For sanitation management, 23,700 community toilets, 2,000 urinals, six container toilets, 25 hopper-tippers, 12 compactors, and 8,000 dustbins will be installed. Approximately 3,300 sanitation workers will be deployed round-the-clock.
The Jal Nigam (Water Corporation) reported that work has commenced 25 days earlier this year compared to previous years, and pre-fabricated STPs (Sewage Treatment Plants) are being utilised.
The Public Works Department has given an assurance that all construction work, including pontoon bridges and chequered plate roads, will be completed by December 15. The Electricity Department also reported that electrification work would be completed on time, and that Ring Main Units (RMUs) and QR codes would be installed on all poles.
Regarding medical facilities, two 20-bed hospitals, 12 first aid centres, 50 ambulances, five Ayurvedic and five homoeopathic clinics will be operational from December 25. The vector control unit has been active since December 1.
Most major tasks, such as land levelling, route demarcation, tenders for tentage and toilets, and the establishment of sector offices, are 90-95 per cent complete, with the remaining essential infrastructure to be in place by December 15.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Medical and Health, Tourism, and Urban Development departments, the police, the Divisional Commissioner, and the Mela Officer, among others.
