The administration in Kasganj district, Uttar Pradesh, is gearing up ahead of the Mahashivratri festival, intensifying preparations to manage the massive influx of Kanwariyas and devotees expected on February 15. Authorities are working on multiple fronts to ensure smooth movement, safety, and essential facilities for pilgrims.

Pilgrimage Routes and Infrastructure Readied

To ease travel for devotees, Kanwar routes are being improved. JCB machines are leveling uneven roads so pilgrims face no inconvenience. The town is being decorated as more than five lakh Kanwariyas are expected to pass through during the festival.

Arrangements at Lehra Gangaghat

The arrival of Kanwariyas has already begun at Lehra Gangaghat. Ghats are being cleaned, police deployment has been increased, and contracts have been awarded for temporary land use, electricity, and lighting. The main road connecting the town to the ghat is being repaired, potholes are being filled, and alternate routes from Lehra village to the Ganga’s main stream are being leveled.

Markets Decked Up for Mahashivratri Fair

Markets in the pilgrimage town are being decorated in preparation for the fair. Shopkeepers have started setting up temporary stalls selling Ganga water containers, Kanwars, puja materials, Rudraksha beads, saffron clothing, and other items related to Shiva worship.

Over Five Lakh Kanwariyas Expected

According to priests, more than five lakh Kanwariyas are expected to originate from Lehra Gangaghat this Mahashivratri. Invitations are being sent to devotees across regions. The first group from Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, 20 devotees, including women, has already arrived and formally began their pilgrimage after collecting Ganga water.

New Railway Underpass to Ease Traffic

In a major relief, the Nadrai railway underpass is expected to become operational before Mahashivratri. Built at a cost of around Rs 8 crore, the underpass has three separate lanes for heavy vehicles, two-wheelers, and pedestrians, which is expected to reduce waterlogging and traffic congestion during the Kanwar Yatra.

Administration and Police Working in Tandem

With Mahashivratri approaching, enthusiasm among priests and traders is rising. District Magistrate Pranay Singh said that the administration, police, and municipality are working together to ensure pilgrims face no difficulties, expressing confidence that this year’s Mahashivratri fair will be historic.
