Farmers looking to boost their income beyond traditional agriculture have reason to celebrate, as Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district has been included in the Central Government’s National Horticulture Mission. This scheme offers subsidies ranging from 35 per cent to 75 per cent to encourage the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, spices, and flowers, as well as beekeeping.
Until now, only a limited number of farmers in the district have benefited from the National Agricultural Development Scheme, engaging in gardening alongside traditional farming. With the launch of the National Horticulture Mission, more farmers will be encouraged to plant new orchards and expand into horticulture.

For those with limited land, beekeeping and mushroom farming offer profitable opportunities. Additionally, small food processing units will be established for producing pickles, jams, murabba, and jelly, with training provided to farmers. The scheme also supports grading and packaging of fruits and vegetables, enabling potato farmers to increase earnings by producing and packaging chips and other products.
Deputy Director of Horticulture, Baljeet Singh, highlighted that the Central Government has issued guidelines for the scheme, which aims to boost both income and employment. He emphasised that young farmers can easily participate in this initiative while staying in their villages.
