Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the upgraded Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) at Shastri Chowk, Gorakhpur on Tuesday. Constructed at a cost of Rs 72.78 crore, the six-storey "A-grade" facility is set to revolutionize criminal investigation in the region.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister emphasised that with this facility, criminals in the state will have "no escape route," as forensic investigations will now uncover crime details in minutes, providing decisive scientific evidence for serious cases.
Key Features And Capabilities
After inspecting the facility, the Chief Minister was briefed on the specific functions of its various units. The upgraded lab is equipped to handle complex investigations including:
Digital And Cyber Forensics: Advanced data recovery capabilities from mobile phones, laptops, hard disks, servers, and CCTV systems.
Voice Analysis: Crucial for verifying calls related to ransom, extortion, threats, and terrorism.
Ballistics Examination: Will significantly speed up the examination of firearms.
Explosives And Chemical Analysis: Dedicated to thoroughly investigating bomb blasts, arson, and chemical crimes.
Document Examination: For verification of forged or disputed documents.
ADG Technical Services Naveen Arora noted that these units will provide robust scientific investigation facilities, ensuring strong evidence is presented in court.

Strategic Importance And Impact
The establishment of this lab serves several critical purposes:
Regional Coverage: It will serve the 11 districts of the Gorakhpur zone, specifically meeting the needs of Purvanchal districts including Deoria, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, and Basti.
Border Security: The lab will play a major role in solving cases related to the Nepal border.
Legal Compliance: CM Adityanath highlighted that under the three new criminal laws, forensic investigation is mandatory for every crime punishable by seven years or more, making this modern lab essential.
Crime Prevention: The facility gives new impetus to investigations regarding terrorism, organised crime, fraud, and cyber crime.
Strengthening Law Enforcement Infrastructure
The Chief Minister provided a comparative overview of the state's progress in law enforcement infrastructure since 2017:
Forensic Labs: The number of labs has increased from 4 in 2017 to 12 today, with six new ones approved. The goal is for every range in Uttar Pradesh to have its own forensic lab.
Police Training: Capacity has surged from 6,000 to 60,000, a record for the country.
Surveillance: A network of over 100,000 CCTV cameras is currently aiding crime prevention across the state.
Project Details And Dignitaries Present
The project was completed by the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam under the Home Department. The event was attended by several key officials and representatives:
MPs and MLAs: MP Ravi Kishan, MLA Vipin Singh, MLA Mahendra Pal Singh, MLA Vimlesh Paswan, and MLA Pradeep Shukla.
Officials: Principal Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad, ADG Zone Mutha Ashok Jain, and District President Janardan Tiwari.
