The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed multiple cases against various companies, their directors, and others in connection with the alleged Sports City project 'scam' in Noida that caused losses of Rs 9,000 crore to state exchequer, the agency said.
The cases were filed at the directions of the Allahabad High Court.
What is the case?
The cases relate to allegations of irregularities in the allotment, development, and sanctioning of Sports City projects between 2011 and 2014.
Reportedly, the Noida Sport City Project aimed to develop world-class sports facilities and residential and commercial areas in Noida's Sectors 78, 79, and 150.
The CBI stated that after the projects were allotted, the allotees breached the related conditions multiple times, allegedly in connivance with Noida Authority officials. The irregularities caused suspected financial loss to the State exchequer at approximately Rs 9,000 crore and undue advantage to certain developers at the State expense.
What did Allahabad HC find?
Earlier in February, the Allahabad High Court ordered a CBI and ED probe. The court brought their developers and consortium members for misappropriating homebuyers and Noida Authority officials under the ambit of inquiry by terming them a 'dirty nexus'.
In connection with the case, the court issued 10 separate judgments. In 2021, a CAG audit revealed irregularities highlighting concerns like underpriced lands, unpaid lease premiums, unauthorized ownership transfers, and improper issuance of occupancy certificates by the Noida Authority despite sports facilities nowhere near completion.
No action taken despite CAG report
The CBI stated that it was also alleged that the authorities took no remedial measures, even after the CAG report pointed out irregularities.
In connection to the case, CBI conducted searches at several locations in Delhi and Noida leading to the recovery of incriminating documents and digital pieces of evidence. According to the probe agency, the probe is underway in the case.
