The Yogi Adityanath government has approved the installation of 40,521 pending solar pumps from the 2024-25 target under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, ensuring completion within the current financial year. The proposal received Cabinet approval on Friday.

Operational in Uttar Pradesh since 2019-20, the PM-KUSUM scheme provides a 60 per cent subsidy for farmers installing solar pumps between 2 HP and 7.5 HP. For 10 HP pumps, subsidies equivalent to 7.5 HP units are offered.

According to government data, 63,345 solar pumps have been installed between 2020-21 and March 2025, enabling irrigation across 1.49 lakh hectares. This shift has led to an estimated annual saving of 548.398 million electricity units, a reduction of 1.26 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions, and a saving of 87.75 million litres of diesel through conversion from diesel pumps.

In 2024-25, solar pumps were installed on 28,811 farms, leaving 40,521 installations pending. For the current fiscal year, the government has set a target of installing 45,000 solar pumps. The Agriculture Department’s proposal to complete the leftover 2024-25 installations this year has now been approved.
