Minor sons of Gangster Atiq Ahmed -Ahzam and Aban- were released from a juvenile custody home in UP's Rajrooppur on Monday following a plea by their auntie Parveen Ahmed Qureshi. Atiq's sister, who lives in Hatwa village, had desired to take the responsibility of raising her two nephews and submitted an application for custody at the district probation office.

Atiq's sister approached the Supreme Court seeking the custody of the deceased gangster's two minor children, who have been residing in a child protection home for the last seven months. However, the Allahabad High Court had earlier rejected her plea, saying that the children's mother was still alive, and Qureshi failed to provide evidence confirming her status as their legal guardian. On her plea, SC had directed the district Child Welfare Committee to decide on the matter at the earliest.
Uttar Pradesh Police had sent both teenagers to a juvenile home following the killing of Umesh Pal in Prayagraj's Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year. He was a key witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.
According to the district probation office, the court of chief judicial magistrate sought a report from the Dhumanganj police on the matter after the role of Atiq Ahmed and his family in the murder came to the fore. The Dhoomanganj police reported that after Umesh Pal's murder, Atiq Ahmed's entire family had absconded and both the children were found abandoned in Chakia. Concerned for their safety, both boys were placed in a children's home by the police.
Notably, 60-year-old Atiq Ahmed, a former gangster turned politician, and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot by three individuals posing as journalists during a media interaction on the night of April 15. The incident occurred while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup.
Following the Killing of Umesh Pal, police registered a case against Atiq Ahmed, Ashraf, their family members, and others based on the complaint of Pal's wife. Atiq Ahmed was also an accused in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case.
