In a first-of-its-kind attempt, around 260 police officials in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat appeared for an examination to test their reasoning capacity vis-à-vis their knowledge of the three new criminal laws.
The question paper contained 75 objective questions, which were to be solved within an hour under tight vigil. The examination was conducted on September 7 at the Baghpat Police Lines.
The test was the brainchild of Baghpat Superintendent of Police (SP) Suraj Kumar Rai, who noticed that officers were unable to effectively pursue cases and ensure conviction before the court.
SP Rai said, "To overcome this shortcoming, we planned the 'BaudhikKshamtaPariksha (Reasoning capacity test)". He added that those officers who cleared the one-hour objective test with high scores would be tasked with the responsibility of key cases.
The Baghpat SP said that the first-of-its-kind test was targeted to assess the knowledge of the police officials related to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the BharatiyaNagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the BharatiyaSakshyaAdhiniyam, 2023.

Speaking about those who didn't perform well, SP Rai said that they will be trained in the police training cell. Rai said that he was checking the answers of the examinee cops, which included 42 women.
SP Rai said that the department plans to hold such test regularly. He added that DGP Rajeev Krishna had ordered officials to ensure that cops were handed assignments that matched their aptitude in areas like forensics, cybercrime, knowledge of law, outdoor policing, and drafting.
SP Rai also reacted to a video circulating on social media showing the use of unfair means during the examination, saying that the department was looking into it.

Sharing his experiences of the test, SHO of Baraut police station, Manoj Kumar Chahal, who entered the police force as a constable in 1994, said, "The last test in which I had appeared was in 2011-12. After the introduction of new laws, this was the first such test conducted." He lauded the efforts of Baghpat SP and said that the examination had out of box questions and tested the practical aspect (of policing).
