The Uttar Pradesh government has officially declared deaths caused by fox and jackal attacks as state calamities. Families of victims who lose their lives due to such attacks will now be eligible for a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. This inclusion marks the addition of two more wildlife species under the state’s human-wildlife conflict compensation policy.
Previously, the State Executive Committee, led by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, had recommended the inclusion of fatalities caused by foxes, jackals, and bees under state calamities.

Acting on the recommendation, the government has now notified fox and jackal attacks as qualifying for compensation. However, deaths due to bee attacks are yet to be reported, pending verification by the Forest Department on whether the bees involved are classified as wildlife.
With this update, a total of 11 wild animals are now covered under the state calamity provision. Other species already listed include crocodiles, elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, leopards, wolves, hyenas, and wild boars — all of which fall under Category 1 of human-wildlife conflict. Foxes and jackals, however, have been placed in Category 2.

In addition to wildlife attacks, the state government has previously declared a wide range of incidents as state calamities, including deaths due to lightning, floods, snake bites, heat waves, drowning, borewell falls, gas leaks, and attacks by nilgai.
In all cases, compensation is provided only after a post-mortem confirms the cause of death. Without post-mortem verification, no claim will be entertained.
