Extensive preventive measures are being implemented by the administration in Kanpur to contain the possible spread of bird flu (avian influenza). As part of the surveillance efforts, 120 bird samples and 200 environmental (service) samples have been sent for testing to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Izzatnagar, Bareilly via a special carrier. These include 30 samples from urban areas and 80 from rural regions.

Thirteen Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are currently active—10 in rural zones and 3 in urban areas—to monitor the situation. So far, no unusual bird deaths or symptoms suggestive of bird flu have been reported in any part of the district.
