As part of a phased implementation in the Basic Education Council schools of the state, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) curriculum will now be taught in Class 4. To facilitate this, the State Institute of Education has subject-wise customised the NCERT-based Class 4 syllabus to reflect the context of Uttar Pradesh.
The curriculum includes textbooks for Language, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Sanskrit, Art, Urdu, and English. Notable changes have been made in the Urdu textbook 'Sitar'. The poem 'Nazm Sham' has been replaced with 'Sone Wale Jago Nazm', and the lesson 'Bahadur Rupa' has been substituted with 'Begum Hazrat Mahal', which will cover her brief history.
The state government has already implemented the NCERT curriculum up to Class 3, with preparations underway to introduce it in Class 4 starting from the year 2026. Rajendra Pratap, Principal of the State Institute of Education, has submitted the customised books—tailored to the state's context—to the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
Key Changes In Syllabus
Urdu: Class 4 students will study the contribution of Begum Hazrat Mahal in the freedom struggle.
Mathematics: In the textbook 'Ganit Mela', the image and exercise questions related to a Jain temple in Karnataka have been replaced with an image and questions regarding the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Art: In the Art textbook 'Bansuri', images of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra from the Banaras Gharana and VidushiGirija Devi, a maestro of semi-classical singing, have been included. Additionally, elements like Kajri (a traditional folk rain song) and related illustrations have been added to align the NCERT curriculum with the state's cultural heritage.
