UP SIR: Dozens Of Longtime Resident Families Dropped From Voter Rolls In Amethi

The first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists is currently underway across 12 states and Union Territories. During this process, over 90 families from the Nat community in Amethi have been excluded while filling out the SIR forms. These families are now questioning why their names were omitted from the census.

Located within the Ahmadpur Gram Panchayat, these 90 families have lived in Nazir Ali ka Purwa for many years. They have participated in Panchayat elections for the past 30 years. Despite this, their SIR forms have never been completed, and over 100 voters have been categorised under the B and C lists.

According to a report by Jagran.com, their primary concern now is how to be included in the A category of the SIR, as they lack documentation from their ancestors. None of their family members are listed in the 2003 Lok Sabha voter list, making it impossible for them to provide proof of residence. Consequently, these 90 families are experiencing distress.

A local resident, a contractor named Nat, explained, "Our ancestors used to live on government land outside the village in tents and makeshift shelters, and no one ever took notice of their situation. The younger generation has now built homes in the village through hard work and persistence. Our names should be included."

Another local, Kallu Nat, added, "People from our community have been voting for the past 30 years, but because our ancestors' names are missing, hundreds of our family members have been excluded from the SIR process. The government should give us justice."

However, the Election Commission has clarified that voters can file claims and objections if any names have been wrongly removed or added.

The Commission has set February 14, 2026 as the deadline for hearing and verifying claims and objections in the 11 states where the draft lists have already been released. The finalised voter lists will be published on February 21.

While the SIR process continues in the first 12 states and Union Territories, the Election Commission has already begun preparations for the remaining 23 regions. Key states in this upcoming phase include Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh.
