In a bid to improve e-challan payment compliance, the Uttar Pradesh Traffic Directorate is set to introduce QR (Quick Response) code-based payment options for traffic violators. A meeting has been held with officials of the State Bank of India to initiate this pilot project, which will first be implemented in Lucknow.

The move aims to simplify the process of paying traffic penalties and increase the recovery rate of e-challan dues, which has been declining in recent years. Currently, e-challans can be paid online, but if the penalty is not cleared within three days, the case is forwarded to the court.

To further ease the process, the department is also considering equipping traffic personnel with card swipe machines for on-the-spot payments. Discussions are underway with multiple banks to facilitate this arrangement.

Officials believe that QR code payment will be a user-friendly method and help boost compliance significantly. If the Lucknow trial proves successful, the initiative will be expanded across the state.
