In a major step towards resolving traffic congestion in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has approved a comprehensive network of 62 ring roads, flyovers, and bypasses across various districts. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who also heads the Public Works Department (PWD), had directed officials to take prompt action during a departmental review meeting held two weeks ago.
Following his instructions, the PWD has included these 62 infrastructure projects in its action plan, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 6,124 crore. The department aims to prioritise urban areas, especially municipalities and municipal councils with populations exceeding one lakh, for the construction of these bypasses and flyovers.
However, towns and cities where National Highways already pass through will be excluded from this initiative, as the construction of road infrastructure in those areas will fall under the jurisdiction of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The move is aimed at curbing the entry of heavy vehicles into urban centers by diverting them via newly constructed ring roads and bypasses, while also addressing congestion in city interiors through strategically located flyovers.
