The work of replacing old electricity meters with smart meters has gained momentum. In the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions, a total of 330,295 consumers' meters have been replaced with smart meters so far.
Divisional Progress Breakdown
Garhwal Division
- Out of a total of 962,035 electricity consumers, 146,183 have received the smart meter facility to date.
- The highest number of meters, 32,606, have been installed in the Dehradun South Electricity Distribution Division.
Kumaon Division
- Out of 625,833 consumers, 184,112 meters have been replaced.
- The highest number of replacements, 25,874, have been in the Kashipur Distribution Division (Udham Singh Nagar).
Future Plans And Official Statement
According to the Energy Corporation, preparations are underway to replace all consumers' meters with smart meters in the Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts. This work is also ongoing in the municipal areas of the plains and hilly regions of Dehradun and Nainital districts. The meters of all consumers will also be replaced in the municipal areas of the remaining nine districts.
UPCL MD Anil Yadav said, "The plan to install smart meters in panchayat areas is proposed for the second phase. The smart meter system will ensure real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, a reduction in losses, and transparency in billing."

Information For Consumers
UPCL has clarified that no fee is charged to consumers for replacing smart meters. If any consumer has a complaint related to their bill, it is being resolved promptly. In case of a high bill, the facility of a check meter has also been made available.
